Kunji pathal/kakka roti(meat curry with rice dumplings)

Hi friends,
Today's my recipe is kunji pathal.It is another popular  Malabar delicacy,it also known as kunji pathiri,kunjorotti,ana pathal,kakkaroti,erachi kodumb.It is very delicious.Kunji pathal made by steamed rice coin in meat gravy.

INGREDIENTS:

  • Mutton or beef..........500g
  • Onion ........................2nos
  • Tomato.......................1no
  • Crushed green chilly...2nos
  • Crushed ginger...........1tbsp
  • Crushed garlic............1tbsp
  • Curry leaves ...............1string
  • Coriander powder........1tbsp
  • Chilly powder ..............1/2tsp
  • Turmeric powder...........1/4 tsp
  • Garam masala................1/2 tsp
  • Salt .................................to taste
  • Chopped cilantro.............2tbsp
  • Coconut oil .... ................3tbsp

FOR DOUGH:

  • Par boiled rice..................3/4cup
  • Grated coconut .................3/4cup
  • Fennel seeds  ......................3/4tsp
  • Shallots ..............................6nos
  • Cumin seeds .......................1/4tsp
  • Rice powder (pathiri podi)..3/4cup
  • Salt ......................................to taste

FOR GRINDING:

  • Grated coconut .....................1/2 cup
  • Fennel seeds ..........................1/2tsp
  • Shallots ...................................4ns
  • Turmeric powder ....................1/4tsp
  • Cardamom ..............................3nos

STEPS:

  1. Soak the parboiled rice in hot water for 3 to 4 hours.
  2. Cut meat into small pieces, wash well and drain it  keep  aside.
  3. Grind the soaked rice along with grated coconut,fennel seeds,cumin seeds,shallots and required water till get a coarse and grainy paste.
  4. Transfer it in a large bowl add salt mix well,then add rice powder little by little mix well using hands till you get a dough that can be shaped into balls.
  5. Grease your palm with oil and take a small portion of dough make balls ,roll it into rounds and just  press in the middle  (refer the photo).
  6. Then steam the kunji pathal for 15to 20 minutes.Once it is done transfer in a tray let it cool.
  7. Heat oil in a pressure cooker add sliced onion crushed green chilly, curry leaves, crushed ginger and garlic saute for onion is golden brown.
  8. Then  add  sliced tomato and salt stir well .when tomato is soft  add  coriander powder,chilly powder,turmeric powder,garam masala fry for couple of seconds (low flame).
  9. Now add meat and chopped cilantro  saute for 4 to5 minutes,then add required hot water mix well and cook until it is done.
  10. Grind all grinding ingredients until get a coarse paste.Once meat is cooked add coconut ground paste stir well,when it is start to boil add kunji pathal into it.
  11. Cook until the curry become thick and well coated  pathiri.sprinkle chopped cilantro.
  12. Kunji pathal is ready to serve.  Enjoy!!!!!!!!!!
