Nadan kappa vevichathu/kappa puzhukku(Seasoned mashed tapioca with grated coconut)

Hi friends,
Today  i am sharing a traditional kerala dish with tapioca/kappa/cassava.It is one of the most popular dish in kerala.This delicious dish goes well with fish/meen curry.

INGREDIENTS:

  • Tapioca(kappa)..1kg
  • Grated coconut..11/2cup
  • Shallots..............8nos
  • Green chilly.......4nos
  • Garlic cloves.....3nos
  • Cumin seeds......1/4tsp
  • Turmeric powder.1/2tsp
  • Salt ......................to taste
  • Water....................as required

FOR SEASONING:

  • Coconut oil..........1tbsp
  • Mustard seeds......1/2tsp
  • Dry chilly..............3nos
  • Curry leaves..........2strings

STEPS:

  1. Peel the tapioca,cut into small cubes and wash well.
  2. In a vessel add  cleaned tapioca and enough water (the water level should be 2-3 inches higher than tapioca) then cook uncovered and allow to boil.
  3. When the water boils,remove from fire and drain the water and again add same amount of water, salt and turmeric powder then cook until it done.
  4. Once it cooked, drain off the  water  using a colander and keep it aside.
  5. Crush cumin,shallots,green chilly and garlic together and keep aside.
  6. In a vessel add cooked tapioca, crushed mix and grated coconut, combine well  then cover and cook on low flame until water evaporates well. 
  7. Now mash tapioca with a wooden spatula and cook  2more minutes then remove from heat.
  8. Seasoning it with above mentioned ingredients,tapioca vevichathu is ready!.
  9. Serve warm with nadan fish curry..Enjoy.!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!.
